There are three types of birthmarks that could appear on the skin of a new born baby. Some of these would fade with growth while others may still remain conspicuous. Port Wine Stain, Café au Lait, and Nevus of Ota are the three types of birthmarks identified and treated by doctors.
The first type of birthmark is the Port Wine Stain (Hemangioma). It is a discoloration of the skin caused by vascular skin conditions. Here the blood vessels are dilated and collect on the part of the dermis forming coloration. This type of birthmark occurs during birth, hence is it congenital.
The second type of birthmarks is the Café au lait (or cream and coffee birthmark). This appears as a mixture of cream and coffee colors. The cause of this is as a result of deposits of melanin on the skin. This deposit is found to be excess in the epidermis. This birthmark is also congenital.
The third type is the Nevus of Ota, which gives the blue black discoloration on the skin. It could occur before birth or after a few years after birth. Nevus of Ota is pigmentation on the skin.
